CARLA is looking for a full-time Executive Sous Chef to join our opening team.
CARLA is a new neighborhood bar and gathering place in Adams Morgan centered around great drinks, shareable food, music, and genuine hospitality. Our menu is globally inspired (think skewers, bao, etc.), approachable, and made for a lively bar — small, but thoughtful and delicious.
We’re looking for someone who loves cooking, takes pride in running an organized kitchen, and enjoys being part of a close-knit team. The Executive Sous Chef will work closely with our Executive Chef and play an important role in shaping the culture and day-to-day rhythm of a new kitchen.
This is a hands-on position. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable working the line during most volume services.
What you’ll do:
Help lead daily kitchen operations, from prep through service
Work closely with the Executive Chef to maintain consistency and quality across the menu
Train, support, and develop kitchen team members
Create a positive, respectful, and collaborative kitchen environment
Work the line and support the team during service
Assist with inventory, ordering, receiving, product rotation, and waste management
Keep prep, stations, walk-ins, and storage areas clean and organized
Maintain strong knowledge of recipes, prep procedures, allergens, and plating standards
Make sure daily prep lists, opening and closing procedures, temperature logs, and kitchen checklists are completed
Uphold food safety, sanitation, and health department standards
Help us build smart, efficient kitchen systems
Work collaboratively with our bar and management teams to create a great experience for both guests and staff
What we’re looking for:
At least two years of kitchen leadership experience as a Sous Chef, Executive Sous Chef, Kitchen Manager, or similar role
Experience working in a busy restaurant, bar, or similarly fast-paced kitchen
Strong organization and attention to detail
A calm, respectful, and supportive approach to leadership
Good communication skills and a willingness to give and receive feedback
An understanding of prep management, inventory, ordering, and food-cost controls
Curiosity about food and an interest in global flavors
Bonus points for multilingual skills or pastry experience!
Physical & Certification Requirements:
Ability to stand for extended periods of time
Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. and perform repetitive bending, stooping, twisting, and lifting
Ability to obtain and maintain a DC Food Protection Manager certification
Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
Compensation & Benefits:
$78,000–$83,000 annual salary, based on experience
